Question by mo in the middle: Any parents of children with autism out there surprised by the Republicans sudden interest in our kids?
Not that I don’t appreciate it, but where have you been for the last eight years? And does anyone know where Sarah Palin’s newfound expertise in autism comes from? Down Syndrome and autism are apples and oranges, and I can promise you, Sarah Palin is never going to have to fight for services for her child.

Question by mommy to one: parents of toddlers with autism…..?
My daughter has displayed some unusual behaviors and has made me think that she might have autism. she is almost 2, no real words, does not point, does not wave bye bye, does not seem to recognize everyday items such as ball or cup, knows them but will not point them out, she still does not point to body parts and half of the time when i call her name she acts as if she doesn’t hear me at all. my question is, for those of you that have gone through this with your young toddler, where did you begin? I mean did you start by taking them to their pediatrician first? I am a little confused about what to ask and where to take her. Will her pediatrician do an autism screening or is that something that only certain qualified people can do? I just need a little assistance in where to start all this. i appreciate any help!! thanks

My niece candance,shes 3 and was diagnosed with autism when she was 1 1/2 its perfectly normal.
we saw she always looked up while looking at stuff
Hard time walking right.
hardly talks
display of temper tantrums cause she didnt understand something.
and ..just alot of un toddler like behaviors…

Question by Kelly: For parents of toddlers with autism, did you get upset after first ABA session?
My 22 month old son diagnosed with autism. I contacted Early Intervention to try and get speech therapy for him. After evaluations they determined he is not ready for speech therapy. He lost his vocabular a few months ago but still babbles and repeats animal sounds. They gave us 10 hours ABA and 2 hours OT. I was told by coordinator that the ABA would be broken up in one hour sessions because he is so young and could not handle two straight hours. He started ABA yestereday and therapist walked in, took him from me and did two straight hours. I told her I thought it would be broken up by one hour at a time and she said I was wrong. He screamed and cried and got red blotches all over face an neck. He was covered in snot most of the session and he threw up on himself two times and I took him and changed him. I really don’t want her back here. She did not break to play with him at all. Is this how ABA works? This is killing me. Thanks.

I just wanted to tell you that I am horrified by the story you just told. I do not have a child with autism, and my heart goes out to you for what you are going to endure. I would absolutely get ahold of the coordinator again, and thell them that you will not work with that therapist again! You put your foot down! That little baby does not need to be traumatized that way. How exactly is is suppose to help him? No child should be traumatized that way, autistic or not! Please, please contact someone and find out what is going on. You are the only one that can speak for your child, and you be strong for him. Best of luck to you!!!

For me the most important thing to remember is that he is a person with feelings and thoughts just like everyone else. I try to figure out what is making him do what he is doing and then either give him a more appropriate way to get the same sensation or result, or figure out how to extinguish the behavior. I try to find his personality when it peeks through and to encourage that and reward it. And I am constantly amazed at his bravery and attitude…he is amazing. He is smart, courageous, strong, and worthy of every little bit of effort I can put into understanding him and his world.

I have a recently diagnosed autistic son,I have received good local support,but feel that i need support from more experienced parents.

Go online, a click google search using “autism parents forum and UK” turned up a number of hits.
Look for sites of organizations that have been around for a while and maintain clean and updated websites.
If you only want a forum look into how it’s maintained, how many parents actually post information on it, and if their experience can help you. Autism is a wide ranging disorder and will affect every child and his/her family differently.
If it seems that the author is just trying to sell you something, encourage unsafe practices, or if the forum is full of spam, look elsewhere.
