autism schools in indiana:
Question by chelseamusickfan: can anyone give me a list of resources available for autistic adults in the state of colorado?
my brother is 20, I think. he lives with my parents and 2 younger siblings in colorado. My mom cant find any services to work with adults with autism. She homeschools my siter and brothers and I guess she just couldnt give my brother the kind of help he needed, and now its to late for him to go to school and she doesnt know what else to do. I know he can learn things because when they lived close by, I helped him learn how to say a few things, but with no one working with him, he has resorted to grunts and crude signing. he is very deep into his autism, and i think if he had at least occationaly someone working with him, he could still brobably learn quite a bit. i know when he was 7 or 8, he could tie his shoes and write his name, but that kind of ability faded as soon as he left his school at about the same age. I just hate hearing about the decline in his state, and knowing i cant hep him from indiana is killing me more. please if anyone can help point me in the right direction, i would be gratefull. as far as i know he is on disability and medicaid.

Found autism schools in indiana in Summer school for Daughter with Autism?
autism schools in indiana:
Question by lynn_artz: Summer school for Daughter with Autism?
Hi all,
My daughter is 9. She has autism of moderate severity and has been doing wonderfully in the program here in NY. She is in a self contained classroom through the school year, receives speech 4x, OT 2x, ABA 5x per week. She has gone to Orange Ulster BOCES for 6 weeks in the summer and has made progress every year.
Her father lives in Indiana. He lived here through the first two summers she was at BOCES. However, he lost his job here and returned to IN. He wants his parenting time over the summer (7 weeks). He says he will put her in a school over the summer there in IN. However, they start the program June 6 (school is out there before Memorial Day, ours here is out the end of Jube)) and they have a waiting list so they don’t take kids for less than the full program (8 weeks). In addition, I don’t know if he is even working and can support the kids. We are pending trial Nov. 24 and her teachers don’t want to get involved as witnesses. So I am worried that he will be awarded his 7 weeks with no school requirements at all.
I am scared for my little girl. She has done so well going to school year round. I am afraid she will not be able to catch up again or will get ‘stuck’ and never move forward.
Anyone have any ideas what to do?

A school district cannot put a child on a “waiting list” for special education. They need to provide services per the child’s IEP. They would be in violation of the law otherwise. Here’s a link explaining it better
http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/iep.change.schools.htm
“When children with disabilities move to a new different school district – in the same state or a different state – the new school district must provide services that are comparable to the services in the previous IEP.
There is no provision in the law to wait one day, one week, one month or 90 days to do this”
You bring copies of your daughters extensive IEP, and a copy of her previous ESY paperwork as well. I would think the school psychologist could write a letter to the court explaining the importance of ESY services for your daughters development and well being. How the need for structure and routine is so important to a child with autism, and this major move for 7 weeks will be disruptive enough. She needs the continuity of school. Bring an outline of the program she attends during summer, the high staff:student ratio and intensive services, so the importance of these services is underscored.
Since you’re laying it all out now, there will be plenty of time to make the arrangements with the other school. For that you might need to send (or have your lawyer send) a letter reminding them of their duties and the law. Your daughter is ENTITLED to comparable services as per her IEP, not “This is what we have available…but since she’s only going to be here 7 weeks and it’s an 8 week program you can’t have it”
Do study up on that Wrightslaw site. If you haven’t please sign up for their newsletter. It’s free and comes in your e-mail. I always learn something from them. I too have a daughter who will be 10 next month. She was diagnosed with autism at 2-1/2. She’s pretty high functioning, but she’ll always need assistance of some type.

Question by katharin: Im looking for a way to volunteer with kids with special needs ranging from mild to severe in the indiana area?
I am 17 years old and i live in Floyds Knobs Indiana and i love to spend time with kids with special needs. this is something that makes me smile from ear to ear knowing i am helping the kids. i am interested in working with young children, teens, or adults. i think i work best with people with a span of types of autism [[mild and severe]] and people with down syndrome. i am not looking for a paid job i just want to make a new friend with special needs. i have friends with autism and down syndrome and ive worked in a classroom setting at my school with several teens w special needs. this is my passion. this is what i want to do later in my life as in working with disabilities. i see no difference between them and myself. if anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. thank you and god bless.

Found autism schools in indiana in How can I improve my Study/Work habits?
autism schools in indiana:
Question by Ese: How can I improve my Study/Work habits?
In school, I generally pick up concepts well, and understand the material fairly clearly and confidently.
However, since elementary school, my success has been plagued by missed assignments, and what I feel may be outright laziness. My tendency is to get mid to low grades while getting high test scores.
I feel as though my habits and priorities are not quite fit for school standards and do not match my potential, but many attempts to change my lifestyle cause me to neglect other ports of my life or just drain so much willpower. In which case, it is strongest with out-of-school work. Do I just not conform to the school standards? Is it developmental?
Doctors tried to call it ADD and in some cases minor autism, but I feel such titles don’t exempt me from anything in the real world. If I can’t compensate, I don’t think I deserve the success, regardless of such “disabilities”.
My cousins don’t seem to have the same struggle. Two will be attending one of the top Bachelor Engineering schools in the US, and another graduated HS valedictorian and was exempted from all finals. I graduated with barely a 3.0 on a normal Indiana Core 40 diploma, again, because of missed assignments. .
What Websites, Methods, or Wisdom can you guys provide me on expressing myself academically?

Sounds like you are on the right track, and good luck.
What I would suggest is a note book. At the start of each date put the date in. As you have assignments, goals tasks. Make sure they are written down with a deadline, and a check box. You need to check them off as you get your goals done. That way when you have time and forgot about it you have a log of your objectives and what you need to accomplish.
Again good luck.

autism schools in indiana and One-party consent rule for recording conversations of a nonverbal minor? Legal or not?
autism schools in indiana:
Question by great_and_mighty_adam_levine: One-party consent rule for recording conversations of a nonverbal minor? Legal or not?
I have a nonverbal minor with Autism who attends an intensive behavioral therapy school for 39 hours per week.
I want to wire him for sound without the school knowing. I do not suspect any wrongdoing on their part, but since the child cannot communicate with me, I feel it is prudent to be able to check on how things are going SOMEHOW.
I live in Indiana, which has the one-party consent rule for recording.
- Is my noverbal child ‘one party’
- Is there a technically a conversation to record, since the child is nonverbal?
- Is this legal?
–>Adam
The school has a good reputation, but asks for 24-hour notice before visit appointments, and has several closed-door rooms without windows where children receive therapy.
Again, I don’t suspect anything wrong, but the environment makes wrongdoing easy.
The reason cited for the 24-hour notice is
- HIPAA – they can’t allow you to overhear conversations regarding other children’s therapy
- They can’t disrupt others therapy
The solution is watching your kid in the ‘surveillance room’. The room must be reserved, as only one room in the place has the video feed, and they have to arrange for your kid to be in it for the appointment.
This is also why I can’t ask them for permission to record. They would be legally obligated to say no because of HIPAA.

Answer by WRG
The law is that at least one of the parties has to consent to the recording. Unless you could prove that the child is consenting then anything that is recorded would be useless in any legal setting and in some states you could be prosicuted.
That said I would have a problem with this 24 hour rule. As the father of a now 18 year old autistic son, I know that I would have dropped in when ever I felt like it. And did.

Found autism schools in indiana in Getting divorced and deadbeat ex starting to fight for custody of disabled child…help?

Question by yep: Getting divorced and deadbeat ex starting to fight for custody of disabled child…help?
Long story short about 18 months ago the Army put my husband under suicide watch because he was showing unsafe behaviors. He had been arrested for public intoxication and he basically went insane. He left out 25 month old son and I and has neverpaid a penny in support and only has called once which was Novemeber of 2010 because thats when I obtained an attorney.
Since he left our son was diagnosed with Autism and was declared disabled by the Government last month. Our son does Speech therapy, Occupational therapy, see’s a child psychiatrist, and is in the local school system.
My husband threatened to kill my son and I because he was served with a child support order so my attorney helped me get a Protective order. Now he’s obtained a high power attorney in my state, Im in Indiana he ran away to Texas, and he wants joint custody and parenting time.
In our Preliminary hearing I was self represented and I got full custody and he was denied parenting time.
What can I do on my end ie:papers to gather, testimony, anything that will seal any loose ends? Ive never known anyone to go through this and Im looking for all ideas and advice, Thank you!
Yes he threatened to kill us and has a long history of abuse. Ive supported our son 100% since July of 2009, he’s never made an attempt to even call and see how is child was but all the sudden he wants parenting time to cut down on support.
I picked a winner huh?! lol
lol nice 3rd comment, yes Im insensitive to the man who raped me infront of my child and held a loaded .45 to me while I was holding our 1 year old child at the time.
He ran to Texas because he was AWOL and his family was hiding him from the Army in Texas.
My first priority is protecting my child from an obviously unsafe person as deemed by the Army, in fact his SGT’s are writting letters to the judge as to why my ex should not ever be around out son.
Also since your “answer” was in the form of a question and didnt pertain to what I was asking you have been reported….
Yeah K I regularly tell people Ive been raped. If you think Im trolling report me and move on.
His PTSD isn’t my problem, I tried to get him help but guess what that got me? Hit with a closed fist.
The “truth” from someone who thinks they know doesn’t hurt, your opinion doesn’t matter in the slightest. Obviously you condone abuse against women and child abandoment. I better your wife is a real winner.
I dont know if it’s PTSD he never got treatment before he cleared our bank account and left.
Gasp guess what k? I tried that but you know what? You cannot commit someone unless they are suicidal.Get your facts straight, Im sure your wife is a peach……..
