Question by mo in the middle: Any parents of children with autism out there surprised by the Republicans sudden interest in our kids?
Not that I don’t appreciate it, but where have you been for the last eight years? And does anyone know where Sarah Palin’s newfound expertise in autism comes from? Down Syndrome and autism are apples and oranges, and I can promise you, Sarah Palin is never going to have to fight for services for her child.

I’m not a parent of an autistic child but I had the same question as I watched the debate tonight.

Question by Anora: Found these articles re autism/vaccine links?
Here they are…..

http://www.thinktwice.com/

http://newsblaze.com/story/20080927170755tsop.nb/topstory.html

To all you new parents, and pregnant women, does the info contained in these links make you reconsider vaccination for your new/impending child? My daughter is 16 and had I know then, what I know now, I can honestly say I would NOT have vaccinated her. How about you folks?
Admittedly refusing information, dismissing it as “newspaper hype” and then spewing crap at me youve been programmed with by the same profession that prepetuates these vaccines and the damage they cause, now that is intelligence in action. WOW, I had no idea this part of YA was so stubbornly blind, by choice. By chosing to NOT read the links, you ignore the fact (that means proven, FACT) that both links are indeed backed by NUMEROUS SCIENTIFIC studies……you know, the kind with scientists and doctors and stuff……and, it plainly and clearly says so, complete with additional sources and other studies (they really mean scientific, complete with medical doctors, protocols and everything).
thank you, environmental, for taking this question to exactly where I intended…as a question to incite debate. Silly me for thinking it might be at least somewhat intelligent when dealing with the YA community!!!!! Your answer is the ONLY one Ive gotten so far worth even the time it took to read it. Thank you!
Even if we dont agree on everything….to have an intelligent answer (even if its only one) is exactly what I was looking for. I care not for the ramblings of fear mongering ignorant folk who can do nothing more than spew hatred and recycled garbage.
AND, for what its worth, i never anywhere, in any way shape or form said that vaccines were the ONLY cause. It IS proven that the differing genetic makeup of these children, is triggered by certain vaccines and that is what results in autism or autistic-like conditions.

Best answer:

Answer by Lisa
I’m not going to bother reading the links. Autism is not caused by vaccines and this has been proven over and over again. Those who say otherwise are just looking for a reason other then pure genetics.

I am very happy that I had my daughter vaccinated and would not think twice about doing it again.

Found autism articles in Do you think that autism could be linked to immunization shots?

autism articles:

Question by Harmless Curiosity: Do you think that autism could be linked to immunization shots?
I’ve heard some people say that their child was perfectly normal until they received immunization shots. Some people believe this could be a cause of autism. Anyone got some good articles about this?

Best answer:

Answer by csmstargazer12
While this debate caused a minor scandal in the nineties, resulting in decreased infant immunization rates (particularly in the measles vaccine), the craze was no more than pandemic panic resulting from a widespread myth. There has been no study which has proven or even witnessed evidence of a scientific link between immunization and autism. No scientist or doctor has been able to find a genetic or medical reason for the development of autism – it is one of the least understood disorders.

What has been proven is that choosing not to vaccinate children results in sickness and death much more often than the rare or mythical complications from vaccination itself. There is no evidence, I repeat, that links autism and vaccination. People who say that their child was normal, got vaccinated, and got autism are simply witnessing the onset of autism in their child UN-RELATED to the vaccination: autism can set in at any point in life, though it is most often diagnosed in 3 – 8 year-olds.

For articles related to this, search online medical journals through jstor or AMA.

Found autism checklist in what should a school administrator do if several preschoolers in one class are assessed to have autism?

autism checklist:

Question by spedteach: what should a school administrator do if several preschoolers in one class are assessed to have autism?
I am an adminstrator of a private regular preschool. Before enrollment, our parents are given preschool readiness checklist. Everything sbout the child looks good until developmental delays and autism are discovered mid school year. Now we have several preschoolers with autism and our school can only accommodate one CSN per class. What do I do? How do I inform the parents of the limited accommodations? Do I disneroll?

Best answer:

Answer by justmeinthisworld
is this state law-

if they all only have mild symptoms–that weren’t picked up on until mis school year—i would hope that they could all still be accommodated..as opposed to having 1 child who needs constant attention
when you say preschool–I am guessing that they are 2 1/2 to 3 years old to start..

at 3 these children (in the US) are eligible for free school district services—sometime the district will even provide services at a private preschool–as a mainstream class is where these kids would be if the did not have special needs…

tell the parents you are concerned that you cannot provide the services the children need–suggest that they contact the school district for evaluation.

Found autism signs in What are signs of autism in adults?

autism signs:

Question by omghelpme: What are signs of autism in adults?
My brother has been troubled by mental illness most of his life, but has never been diagnosed with one specific disorder, besides depression. As I learn more about autism, if would seem that he suffered from it as a child and left untreated (which certainly could have led to the depression). What are signs of autism in adults and how do they differ from those in children?

Best answer:

Answer by Snazzlefrazz
A child or adult with autism will have problems interacting with people (may avoid eye-contact, may not imitate others, may not use gestures, may prefer to be alone, may not understand social cues). A child or adult with autism will have problems communicating (may not speak, language may be delayed, may be unable to initiate or maintain a conversation, language may be unusual or odd, may repeat what others say, may be unable to use their imagination in play). A child or adult with autism may show restricted, repetitive, or ritualistic behaviors, interests, and activities (may be preoccupied with a narrow range of interest, may insist on sameness, may line toys up in the same way time after time, may flap hands, may spin self or objects, may rock, may be upset if the routine changes in any way, may focus on only a small part of a toy or object).

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a pervasive developmental disorder at the highest end of the autism spectrum. People with AS develop language normally, but often have difficulty with social interactions, fine and gross motor coordination, and eye contact. They may be extremely passionate about just one or two topics, with little patience for small talk. They also may struggle to handle normal daily activities, such as organizing time, managing conflict, or even facing the sensory overload presented by malls and grocery stores.

Adults with AS may appear painfully shy, or they may be extremely outgoing – sometimes to the point of being “in your face.” That’s because people with AS often misinterpret social interaction.

Found autism test in Should I let a theropist test my son for autism?

autism test:

Question by Mom of 1: Should I let a theropist test my son for autism?
My son is two and he don’t talk much. I don’t think he has a problem but the Dr made him start speech therapy, now they want him tested for autism. I feel they are trying to label my son. Should I let them and when should enough be enough?

Best answer:

Answer by Gina M
you cant let your own issues with them ‘labelling’ your son stop him from getting the proper care he needs, the GP will know more about the signs of autism than you will and if they can do a test to find out for sure then surely you would want to know so that you can help him in any way you can to live a normal life.

Found autism checklist in Do I have high-functioning autism or low functioning?

autism checklist:

Question by Raymond: Do I have high-functioning autism or low functioning?
I am 21 years old and have been experiencing problems fitting into the social norms of society. I have the exact symptoms of aspergers and low functioning autism. I have specific interests and only like to talk about what im interested in. I have no social skills so I fail interviews. Never have the right word for the right situation I feel like a child in an adult body. I understand adult subjects such as algebra, physics, and am into strange science such as antigravity and and am into electronics and lasers and atoms all science and think about those things constantly. I am seeing a neurologist he claims I dont have aspergers or he doesnt think I have it because aspergers is diagnosed at a earlier age, but I have had these symptoms my whole life. Since I was 4 my mom says I was different and I matched every single symptom on the asperger or autism checklist for children, I just was not diagnosed, and I feel different than everyone. At my temp jobs I am quiet unless it’s about what I am interested in otherwise I dont talk. I feel I dont have a high iq because I failed the asvab I took at meps and also didnt do too well on an iq test on the internet one was phd certified and one was on the mensa website. Also after highschool I was unemployed for a year then worked for 6 months then was unemployed for a year and a half and I was isolated and didnt interact with people because I do not connect well with people I am socially awkward so my memory isnt what it used to be and am only able to get jobs through a temp service because I fail interviews. So my question is despite all of my specialized interests, do people with aspergers have memory problems? or since I have trouble retaining info and feel I dont have a high or average iq, do I have low functioning autism? Sorry for such a long descriptive story and sorry for not keeping it concise. I hope hope someone has a helpful opinion.

Best answer:

Answer by princepesa
my daughter has autism and she does not have a memory problem per say she is social different as you wrote and she has certain things that she excels at things that interest her if the doctor said you did not have aspergers and you feel you are wrongly diagnosed go to another doctor get a second opinion only a doctor can diagnose you

Found still in diapers Autism in How closely do autistic children need to be supervised?

still in diapers Autism:

Question by mars2boys: How closely do autistic children need to be supervised?
We have a 5-year old neighbor who is not potty trained and does not communicate well. She is still in diapers, yet she roams the neighborhood unsupervised…no shoes, no helmet when on her bike. I am considering calling social services, if she is not mentally of the age to be potty trained or communicate like a 5-year old, I wonder if she should be unsupervised outside so much. I don’t have much experience with autistic children, so wondered if this is more of a concern than if it were a child without autism.

Best answer:

Answer by Needs suggestions
It dpends on the type of autisim and the severity of it. There are some types of autism where the child doesnt need any supervision. Although they are somewhat ‘altered’ they are able to live a generaly normal life. However there are also some people who need constant supervision. Alot of younger austic child, and those who are going threw puberty can be ver violent. It depends! You cant make judements.

But 5 year old shouldnt be outside unsupervised either way. Autistic or not. I think you should call social services. Even if they dont take her away they may be able to help the family or possibly find a way for them to afford extra help.

Found autism schools in indiana in Summer school for Daughter with Autism?

autism schools in indiana:

Question by lynn_artz: Summer school for Daughter with Autism?
Hi all,
My daughter is 9. She has autism of moderate severity and has been doing wonderfully in the program here in NY. She is in a self contained classroom through the school year, receives speech 4x, OT 2x, ABA 5x per week. She has gone to Orange Ulster BOCES for 6 weeks in the summer and has made progress every year.

Her father lives in Indiana. He lived here through the first two summers she was at BOCES. However, he lost his job here and returned to IN. He wants his parenting time over the summer (7 weeks). He says he will put her in a school over the summer there in IN. However, they start the program June 6 (school is out there before Memorial Day, ours here is out the end of Jube)) and they have a waiting list so they don’t take kids for less than the full program (8 weeks). In addition, I don’t know if he is even working and can support the kids. We are pending trial Nov. 24 and her teachers don’t want to get involved as witnesses. So I am worried that he will be awarded his 7 weeks with no school requirements at all.

I am scared for my little girl. She has done so well going to school year round. I am afraid she will not be able to catch up again or will get ‘stuck’ and never move forward.

Anyone have any ideas what to do?

Best answer:

Answer by Kathi
A school district cannot put a child on a “waiting list” for special education. They need to provide services per the child’s IEP. They would be in violation of the law otherwise. Here’s a link explaining it better

http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/iep.change.schools.htm

“When children with disabilities move to a new different school district – in the same state or a different state – the new school district must provide services that are comparable to the services in the previous IEP.

There is no provision in the law to wait one day, one week, one month or 90 days to do this”

You bring copies of your daughters extensive IEP, and a copy of her previous ESY paperwork as well. I would think the school psychologist could write a letter to the court explaining the importance of ESY services for your daughters development and well being. How the need for structure and routine is so important to a child with autism, and this major move for 7 weeks will be disruptive enough. She needs the continuity of school. Bring an outline of the program she attends during summer, the high staff:student ratio and intensive services, so the importance of these services is underscored.

Since you’re laying it all out now, there will be plenty of time to make the arrangements with the other school. For that you might need to send (or have your lawyer send) a letter reminding them of their duties and the law. Your daughter is ENTITLED to comparable services as per her IEP, not “This is what we have available…but since she’s only going to be here 7 weeks and it’s an 8 week program you can’t have it”

Do study up on that Wrightslaw site. If you haven’t please sign up for their newsletter. It’s free and comes in your e-mail. I always learn something from them. I too have a daughter who will be 10 next month. She was diagnosed with autism at 2-1/2. She’s pretty high functioning, but she’ll always need assistance of some type.

Found still in diapers Autism in I think my son has autism?

still in diapers Autism:

Question by Lanandra: I think my son has autism?
My son is six years of age and reads at a seventh grade level. whenever he reads a book he becomes completely absorbed in it. He talks to us as if we are characters from the book. he will not listen to us when we call his name or talk to us unless we say his character’s name. He is also behind in daily skills. He still wears diapers, cannot walk, but he speaks with a large vocabulary. He cannot bathe himself or feed himself unless it is with a spoon or with his hands. He watches movies over and over (like tom sawyer and huck finn). He has night terrors and throws small fits in crowded places. He is fasinated by kites and traffic jams. He likes to line up his toy cars in a long line. Do you think he is showing signs of autism? My friend tells me he is just developing slowly, but i want to get a few other opinions before i take him to a doctor.

Best answer:

Answer by Essence
I’m no doctor, but he does have some signs of autism. It’s probably best if you speak to a professional (your GP will refer your son to them I think) to see if he is autistic.

For my public speaking class i am doing an informational sppech on Autism… i need to incorporate activies also.. i am looking for activities that i can do that will demonstrate the difficulties of having Autism and show the students what this disorder is like.. if any one can help i would greatly appreicate it !

Autism really emcompasses a vast array of conditions so I doubt it can be simulated but there is an autistic author named Temple Grandin who has several videos and has authored a few books on her condition. Google her. There are varying degrees of autism and she is more high-functioning than most but it is still very insightful.

Found autism schools in indiana in How can I improve my Study/Work habits?

autism schools in indiana:

Question by Ese: How can I improve my Study/Work habits?
In school, I generally pick up concepts well, and understand the material fairly clearly and confidently.

However, since elementary school, my success has been plagued by missed assignments, and what I feel may be outright laziness. My tendency is to get mid to low grades while getting high test scores.
I feel as though my habits and priorities are not quite fit for school standards and do not match my potential, but many attempts to change my lifestyle cause me to neglect other ports of my life or just drain so much willpower. In which case, it is strongest with out-of-school work. Do I just not conform to the school standards? Is it developmental?

Doctors tried to call it ADD and in some cases minor autism, but I feel such titles don’t exempt me from anything in the real world. If I can’t compensate, I don’t think I deserve the success, regardless of such “disabilities”.

My cousins don’t seem to have the same struggle. Two will be attending one of the top Bachelor Engineering schools in the US, and another graduated HS valedictorian and was exempted from all finals. I graduated with barely a 3.0 on a normal Indiana Core 40 diploma, again, because of missed assignments. .

What Websites, Methods, or Wisdom can you guys provide me on expressing myself academically?

Best answer:

Answer by Klathorn
Sounds like you are on the right track, and good luck.

What I would suggest is a note book. At the start of each date put the date in. As you have assignments, goals tasks. Make sure they are written down with a deadline, and a check box. You need to check them off as you get your goals done. That way when you have time and forgot about it you have a log of your objectives and what you need to accomplish.

Again good luck.
