Question by Claire: My baby doesn’t like it when I grab or touch his hands?
My 8 month old son doesn’t like it when I try to clap his hands together or do anything with his hands and arms. Is this normal?

I’ve checked out autism checklists for babies, and this isn’t on there, and he doesn’t show any of the other symptoms listed for autism.

Does anyone else’s baby do this?

It’s ok..your baby is just freaked out about being in this new world and discovering himself..my baby doesn’t do that but I’m sure yours will grow out of it….

Question by *~*love always*~*: Autism question…..?
Ok I asked a question earlier about my bf’s 4 year old son. All the sudden over the last few weeks 2-3 he has basically quit talking. When this first started he was mubbling, talking very softly & we noticed he was putting his tongue on the side of his mouth when he would talk. My bf’s ex wife refuses to believe that this is a problem..She claim’s its just a phase but my bf wants to get thier son into the doctor so when he tries to take him she always says that something came up etc

Several people mentioned that it could be autism. Would symptoms just now start showing up? I thought autism was normally noticable by 1 or 2. Or could the symptoms have been there all along & they were not noticing them? I have only been dating him 6 months but when we 1st started dating his son was speaking fine.

He is in speech therapy but he seems to be regressing instead of improving. Where is somewhere I can get a ‘checklist’ of autism symptoms so I can look to see if he shows anymore signs?
Now he won’t talk at all. He hasn’t said a single word other then daddy & sissy in at least the 2 days when I have been with them. I don’t know how much longer it has been going on when he was at his mom’s house

webmd would work, but you really should get him to the doctor. this was on an episode of scrubs where perry’s friend’s son built a block castle perfectly and with perfect color combinations, which is how he discovered he had autism. even if its nothing, its better to be safe then sorry. i hope everything works out well.

My son is already 3 years old and still not talking,. he repeats words when i ask him to though but he doesn’t communicate. I searched the internet for autism signs., there are a few sites with checklist for my guidance. And it says that my son has MILD AUTISM… (he likes playing with other children, he doesn’t have his own “world”, he does have a good eye contact too) but there were also signs that he possess like (very irritable, delayed speech of course, does not point to what he needs or like etc.. )

My question is will he be better when i enroll him at a Toddler school?
( i don’t have the money yet to have him checked to a developmental psychologist)

i need help , support and advice please…

Autism is not an important issue in this country., One must have lots of money in order to have a very good treatment and or care for autism. So i really admire your country for the benefits you are receiving.. unlike here (we have public healthcare providers here but they treat us like crap, and sometimes extort money when they think you belong in a middle class).. =( anyway… thank you for your warm advices., it helped me a lot…i have already accepted that my son is autistic., i am just praying that he gets better… i hope all of our babies will… thanks again..

I really don’t want to the a/hole here, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the money or not. If you think your son displays any signs of autism, you need to have him evaluated. Pre-schools and toddler schools aren’t trained to diagnose and treat autism. If anything he will end up getting kicked out because they can’t deal with it.

Go to early intervention if you are in the US. Look in the phone book. They will help you. My son is autistic and he can’t go to a real school.

Although delayed speech and being irritable doesn’t actually mean autism. He could just be slow to talk and get irritated because he can’t communicate. None the less early intervention will hook you with speech pathologists. My son is only 2 and speaks like a 5 year old. He doesn’t make eye contact though and does live in his own world, along with banging his head on the walls day and night.

He could have hearing issues too. You need to find the money or find an agency in your town that will deal with this.. your son will be extremely disadvantaged if you just throw him into a school and he doesn’t get any therapy… even if he’s just late to speak without autism… you should still get him a speech pathologist. I don’t understand why your PCP hasn’t said something and given you a referral.

Question by spedteach: what should a school administrator do if several preschoolers in one class are assessed to have autism?
I am an adminstrator of a private regular preschool. Before enrollment, our parents are given preschool readiness checklist. Everything sbout the child looks good until developmental delays and autism are discovered mid school year. Now we have several preschoolers with autism and our school can only accommodate one CSN per class. What do I do? How do I inform the parents of the limited accommodations? Do I disneroll?

is this state law-

if they all only have mild symptoms–that weren’t picked up on until mis school year—i would hope that they could all still be accommodated..as opposed to having 1 child who needs constant attention
when you say preschool–I am guessing that they are 2 1/2 to 3 years old to start..

at 3 these children (in the US) are eligible for free school district services—sometime the district will even provide services at a private preschool–as a mainstream class is where these kids would be if the did not have special needs…

tell the parents you are concerned that you cannot provide the services the children need–suggest that they contact the school district for evaluation.

Question by Raymond: Do I have high-functioning autism or low functioning?
I am 21 years old and have been experiencing problems fitting into the social norms of society. I have the exact symptoms of aspergers and low functioning autism. I have specific interests and only like to talk about what im interested in. I have no social skills so I fail interviews. Never have the right word for the right situation I feel like a child in an adult body. I understand adult subjects such as algebra, physics, and am into strange science such as antigravity and and am into electronics and lasers and atoms all science and think about those things constantly. I am seeing a neurologist he claims I dont have aspergers or he doesnt think I have it because aspergers is diagnosed at a earlier age, but I have had these symptoms my whole life. Since I was 4 my mom says I was different and I matched every single symptom on the asperger or autism checklist for children, I just was not diagnosed, and I feel different than everyone. At my temp jobs I am quiet unless it’s about what I am interested in otherwise I dont talk. I feel I dont have a high iq because I failed the asvab I took at meps and also didnt do too well on an iq test on the internet one was phd certified and one was on the mensa website. Also after highschool I was unemployed for a year then worked for 6 months then was unemployed for a year and a half and I was isolated and didnt interact with people because I do not connect well with people I am socially awkward so my memory isnt what it used to be and am only able to get jobs through a temp service because I fail interviews. So my question is despite all of my specialized interests, do people with aspergers have memory problems? or since I have trouble retaining info and feel I dont have a high or average iq, do I have low functioning autism? Sorry for such a long descriptive story and sorry for not keeping it concise. I hope hope someone has a helpful opinion.

my daughter has autism and she does not have a memory problem per say she is social different as you wrote and she has certain things that she excels at things that interest her if the doctor said you did not have aspergers and you feel you are wrongly diagnosed go to another doctor get a second opinion only a doctor can diagnose you

Watch for the Red Flags of Autism

(The following red flags may indicate a child is at risk for atypical development, and is in need of an immediate evaluation.)

In clinical terms, there are a few “absolute indicators,” often referred to as “red flags,” that indicate that a child should be evaluated. For a parent, these are the “red flags” that your child should be screened to ensure that he/she is on the right developmental path. If your baby shows any of these signs, please ask your pediatrician or family practitioner for an immediate evaluation:

* No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter

* No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, or other facial expressions by nine months or thereafter

Question by him n her: Where can i get a copy of the Autism Behaviour Checklist (ABC)?
I have seen one that is set out in 3 sections, and to be diagnosed with autism you need a certain amount of ticks in each section. Cant seem to find one on the net like this..
Any ideas?
