Question by Abbie!: Any fictional books about autism?
I am reading a book in a Literature circle called Rules. it is about a young boy with Autism and his sister has to be there for him at all times. I have to say another book with either a child with Autism, or a similar theme to “People with a disability are just as important as any other person”. And it has to be fictional!!!!
Thanks
Or it could be a movie too!

to remember about your autistic child?

Answer by Mom2Three
For me the most important thing to remember is that he is a person with feelings and thoughts just like everyone else. I try to figure out what is making him do what he is doing and then either give him a more appropriate way to get the same sensation or result, or figure out how to extinguish the behavior. I try to find his personality when it peeks through and to encourage that and reward it. And I am constantly amazed at his bravery and attitude…he is amazing. He is smart, courageous, strong, and worthy of every little bit of effort I can put into understanding him and his world.

May 31, 2006 – Isaac Kohane, Lawrence J. Henderson Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Health Sciences and Technology; Associate Professor of Medicine, HMS/Children’s Hospital Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a socio-cognitive disorder which has a high (up to 1% by some estimates) prevalence in our society. More controversially, ASD is reported to be on the increase. Less controversially, ASD is known to have a strong inherited component as well as an environmental component. And yet, despite decades of research, precious little is understood about the causes of this disorder and existing therapies are often unsatisfactory. Notwithstanding, the genomic revolution offers the potential for some novel insights and therapies. The seminar will review the challenges and the solutions that computational approaches bring to a systematic understanding of ASD. The integrative role of computing in synthesizing insights from the genome, bibliome, imaging and other measurement modalities is reviewed and a broader role for computing in the investigation of complex diseases is proposed.

well, are you looking for a publishing company? if so, i would look more along the lines of a company that would publish autobiographies or first-hand stories like yours. you could pick up a copy of “writer’s market,” it has hundreds of listings for publishing companies and what they look for in their books.
as for an agent, well, you’d have to do the same thing. some agents take only certain genres.
you could always self-publish, a friend of mine did on her book about her scoliosis. it is always an option, and sometimes after promoting it or successful selling, a company will pick you up and begin publishing your book through their company. BUT, self-publishing can be very expensive and there’s no guarantee a company would take it in.
hope i helped, best of luck!

autism books:
Question by E.J: Can anyone reccomend some books that deal with social differences such as autism and the like?
I need a book that deals with social differences like autism and the fact that it is okay to be different that would be suitable for adolescents to read as a set text in a school. Preferably recent, fiction texts that students would enjoy studying.
Thanks! =]

I’m sure there are many, but the one that I can think of right now is Evidence of Harm, which is a very well researched and well written book. http://www.amazon.com/Evidence-Harm-Vaccines-Epidemic-Controversy/dp/0312326459/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1263184109&sr=8-1
