signs of autism in toddlers:
Question by jessickahopeless: I would like to know more about Autism. Mostly about the signs in younger children/toddlers. OCD possibly?
My 2 and half year old toddler does some weird things, and I*m worried he might be autistic and possibly ocd.
These include:
*Lining up his toy cars in a straight line for 2+ hours
*Taking things from the fridge and throwing them down the stairs. I tell him not to, but its like he can*t stop.
*When he wakes up from a nap, he cries for up to 45 minutes like he doesn*t remember where he is or who I am. I can*t touch him or talk to him cause it just makes it worse.
*He*s been speaking the same mystery language for over a year. When he does learn new words, he only uses them about 3 times, then completely forgets them.
*He wants nothing to do with the toilet at all. He also doesn*t want me to change his diapers when it*s wet or dirty.
*He*ll only sleep with one blanket, and it*s not a kid*s blanket, its a queen sized ugly blue down comforter.
*Anything that isn*t exactly right, he*ll freak out over. Wrinkles in a rug, a speck of dirt on the tv etc
There*s more but I*m out of room.
Yes, he knows almost all the letters already, all the numbers from 1 to 10, although i don*t think he understands. Lately he*s been smacking himself in the face when he does something wrong and it makes me want to cry.

Sounds like some autistic traits but they’re still too vague to tell. Things I noticed with my son were, screaming for no reason, not screaming as in crying, just screaming. Another big one is “stimming” flapping hands up and down, spinning in circles or running back in fourth, jumping, repeating words over and over, maybe scenes from movies or cartoons. Eating habits changed, likes routine, tantrums, seems to be extremely “gifted” in some areas including, numbers, letters, colors or shapes. The autism spectrum is so large so it’s really hard to say, but if you have these concerns I would take him to a specialist. Good Luck.

Question by Abbie!: Any fictional books about autism?
I am reading a book in a Literature circle called Rules. it is about a young boy with Autism and his sister has to be there for him at all times. I have to say another book with either a child with Autism, or a similar theme to “People with a disability are just as important as any other person”. And it has to be fictional!!!!
Thanks
Or it could be a movie too!

Question by Huliganjetta: Question about Autism in toddlers?
Lately I’ve been very worried about my son. He is going to be 3 in December.
-He doesn’t talk much (only says about 10 words or so) and they aren’t very clear. He used to say other words, but hasn’t said them in a while, or he changes the pronunciation, like “Car” is now “Carday” and “Train” is now “Ken” Only my husband and I understand what he’s trying to say and he says things twice a lot…
(momma, dadda, papa, no no, eat eat, all gone, oh no!, owwie, kitty, please, i love you)
and he points or grabs our hand and takes us to what he wants, instead of asking. and he gets really upset when we don’t know what he wants.
-He runs in circles a lot
-He is very hyper…I mean VERY VERY hyper…more hyper than my cousin who has ADHD
-He throws horrible fits, especially in front of other people and before bed. He will not sleep in his own room, must be with my husband and I, thought we’ve tried everything
-He ignores people. We thought maybe he had a hearing problem, but he was tested and his hearing is fine. He just doesn’t listen to us, or obey anyone. He doesn’t understand when I tell him something like “If you don’t do this, you will not get to (w/e his punishment is) he just doesn’t know what it means it seems like.
-He is fearless. He will climb out of his very tall crib even though it hurts his stomach and ribs every time. He will run away from us, even run in the street when cars are coming. He attacks the cat even though he knows it will scratch him
-He is very independent, wants to do everything himself.
-He has never liked to cuddle, even as a newborn…he hated to be confined. Wouldn’t even stay in his blanket. He wouldn’t breastfeed and would thrash his head back and forth every time id try and feed him.
-He doesn’t like to play like most kids I see. He always wants to play with things that aren’t toys (the oven, the sink, the bath, the vacuum, etc) and he lines his cars and trains up in rows. He had 25 cars lined up once…all the reds together, greens, blues, etc…and does things like this often. If we try to play with his toys with him he grabs them and gets mad and puts them back in their place. He won’t let me read him a book (grabs it and throws it)
-He will only eat certain things. He won’t eat vegetables at all, even if I try and disguise it, he knows.
-I try to discipline him and he thinks it’s funny
-I’ve been trying to potty train him for several months consistently and he just wants to play in the toilet, and tells me “pee pee” or “uh oh” after he goes in his diaper, but not before. Sticker charts and things like that don’t work because he doesn’t seem to understand it…he just wants to rip them up.
The list goes on and on. He can understand when people leave, and wants to give kisses. but when I tell him to do something, or say something he won’t until we’re 20 minutes down the freeway and then he’ll say “bye papa” or “bye train” or w/e it was we were trying to get him to do/say.
Do these seem like signs of Autism? or something else?
I have a job, but I don’t have health care and can’t afford Dr visits. MediCal and other gov’t aide has denied me several times now, so I don’t know what I can do…
Thank you to everyone who reads/replies to this.

my brother is autistic, and he has hard a really rough life,
i think that no matter what videos you show them they just dont have the ability to understand, they cant see that they are different, because they may not want to, though it really depend on levels,

Question by ireenie08: Is anyone paranoid about autism and constantly looking for signs in their infant?
I have a 8 month old boy and am constantly worried about autism. I know that it’s difficult to tell at this age, but I’m just curious if anyone else is fearful as well? Does anyone else think they see subtle signs of autism in their baby, but are probably just being irrational like me?

autism in toddlers:
Question by Barbara: How would you handle a spouse who is in complete denial about your toddlers autism diagnosis?
My husband and I are married almost 4 years. Second marriage for both of us. I have a son and he has a son from our first marriages. We have a beautiful baby boy named Danny who is 22 months old and just diagnosed autistic. Danny lost his speech, lines things up, rocks and bangs head, tantrums a lot, is hypersensitive to noise and water, won’t even get in tub anymore. He never responds to his name and stares at wheels on toy cars and spins them. My husband says that Danny is mechanical and that is why he likes wheels and that he just “has nothing to say” so he stopped talking. He says Danny will “grow out of this” and I’m creating drama. Does he think that therapists come here two times a day for no reason? How do you deal with someone in denial like this? It makes me angry and I feel alone with all this. He won’t talk about Danny’s future at all.

Answer by bgirl28nj
That’s really not good at all that your husband won’t work with the problem. That in itself is going to cause more problems for your son and for your marriage. Your going to have to keep treating Danny in speech therapy as well as all of the other threapies that go along with it, don’t give up on your son (I can tell you won’t) but your husband is going to have to help out because ignoring autism can actually make Danny’s problem worse. Your going to have to drill it into his head or bring him along to a visit with your son’s physician. Men are real morons sometimes.
