Captioned Reply to GRASP/Autism Speaks Articles

This is a reply to the “articles of understanding” exchanged between Autism Speaks and GRASP, in which both sides pretty much ignored the existence of autistic self-advocates who do not speak and do not want to be cured, reducing us to old cliches. It primarily addresses the assumptions made by Alison Tepper Singer in her article and some of her other work. This is the captioned version.

Question by dobby: exceptional parent magazine and autism article?
has anyone read the recent exceptional parent magazine’s article on a family with three autistic children? the article is called finding their way. in the article it mentions how the children were put on a casin and gluten free diet and given cod liver oil, vitamin B12, and glyconutrients and phytonutrients supplements, these supplements had a tremendously profound effect on the autistic kids. they went from not talking at all to talking and the began passing their occupational and physical therapy goals as well as thier ABA goals it goes on to say that their awarness and understanding improved as well. my question is : what are these phytonutrients and glyconutrients? ( the article gives some explaination) are they pills or vitamins? where can I purchase these? I already know about the B12 and fish oil. but I have never heard or the phyto and glyconutrients. and if you have an autistic or adhd child and have not read this article, then get a copy of it or better yet subcribe to it .

I have heard of this and it’s very controversial. My son has Aspergers. It’s on the autistic spectrum. His doctor is on staff at a major teaching hospital where the chief of psychiatry specializes in autism. I asked whether or not she had heard of it and if it would help. She said that their was no research to support it.
However, improving anyone’s diet has to be of some help. It certainly can’t hurt.
Glyconutrients are:
Fucose (not to be mistaken for fructose)
Galactose
Glucose
Mannose
N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc)
N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)
N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac)
Xylose
Phytonutrients are fruits and vegetables.
I’m sure you could find these at any health food store. Some of the better ones have an advisor that works where the supplements are.

I’m Doing a (10) Page, (10) Point Arial Font Term Paper On Autism For “Sociology of Gender” class. The Professor Would Like Us To Incorporate Social Aspects to The Topic. For Example, I would have to Examine if Autism is Primarily Socially-Influenced By Contemporary US Society or If Autism Is Primarily Influenced By Genes, Biology (Essentialist Argumentation Vs. Social Constructionism Argument)
If Someone Could Provide Some Links, or Some Peer-Reviewed Academic Journals. I would So Much Appreciate IT!!!!!!!!!! College Work Is A Pain Sometimes…..

Hard to access those. Maybe you should go to a local university and access their computer a and/or library catalog. Otherwise peer-reviewed articles aren’t readily available to the public.
