The Autism Guide - Changing The Way You Look At Autism
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Eric_Medemar]Eric Medemar

For many people, even the mention of the word autism can send shutters down their spines. Go ahead say the word to yourself for a moment. What images come to mind? Rainman, children rocking in the corner, or maybe students riding by on the dreaded "short bus". It is not your fault, up until recently autism has not gotten even close to the attention that it deserves. With around 1 out of every 170 children getting autism, it may be time to start sending out different images to the public.

Autistic children are not some special breed of children that need to be branded and shoved off in a corner somewhere. They are children, not autistic children, they are just children. Autistic children like all children, are beautiful and happy beings that we could all learn alot from. They only become autistic children when we compare certain aspects of their conscious, and mentality with that of a perceived "normal child". On the other side of the coin, when comparing a high functioning autistic child with a "normal child", the normal child only contains a fraction of their intelligence. Does that make the "normal child" a slow child? On the comparative level the answer is yes, but because "normal children" are the rule, rather than the exception, society somehow ignores this fact.

Starting today, try to see autistic children as just children. Remove your comparisons to what the perceived "normal child" is. By removing the comparisons from all things in life, you will be able to see things as they truly are.
