Question by mariany: AUTISM SIGNS 3year old?
My son is already 3 years old and still not talking,. he repeats words when i ask him to though but he doesn’t communicate. I searched the internet for autism signs., there are a few sites with checklist for my guidance. And it says that my son has MILD AUTISM… (he likes playing with other children, he doesn’t have his own “world”, he does have a good eye contact too) but there were also signs that he possess like (very irritable, delayed speech of course, does not point to what he needs or like etc.. )
My question is will he be better when i enroll him at a Toddler school?
( i don’t have the money yet to have him checked to a developmental psychologist)
i need help , support and advice please…
Thank you for the advice.. =p and you gave me hope ms. La’Miya R. and to all as well.. i am from the philippines.. Autism is not an important issue in this country., One must have lots of money in order to have a very good treatment and or care for autism. So i really admire your country for the benefits you are receiving.. unlike here (we have public healthcare providers here but they treat us like crap, and sometimes extort money when they think you belong in a middle class).. =( anyway… thank you for your warm advices., it helped me a lot…i have already accepted that my son is autistic., i am just praying that he gets better… i hope all of our babies will… thanks again..

I really don’t want to the a/hole here, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the money or not. If you think your son displays any signs of autism, you need to have him evaluated. Pre-schools and toddler schools aren’t trained to diagnose and treat autism. If anything he will end up getting kicked out because they can’t deal with it.
Go to early intervention if you are in the US. Look in the phone book. They will help you. My son is autistic and he can’t go to a real school.
Although delayed speech and being irritable doesn’t actually mean autism. He could just be slow to talk and get irritated because he can’t communicate. None the less early intervention will hook you with speech pathologists. My son is only 2 and speaks like a 5 year old. He doesn’t make eye contact though and does live in his own world, along with banging his head on the walls day and night.
He could have hearing issues too. You need to find the money or find an agency in your town that will deal with this.. your son will be extremely disadvantaged if you just throw him into a school and he doesn’t get any therapy… even if he’s just late to speak without autism… you should still get him a speech pathologist. I don’t understand why your PCP hasn’t said something and given you a referral.

My son has pervasive autism its a mild form of autism. When he started preschool he started doing really well. He couldn’t do everything the other children could but his communication skills got really good. I think your son will do very well in toddler school it would also be an good idea to get him evaluated by an professional. I went through a program called First Steps its an early intervention system that provides services to children with developmental disabilities from birth to age 3 and their families. There pretty much every where and for low income families.
I’m with Sham’s. You need to get your son evaluated. He might also have a speech problem, like apraxia. Go see a pediatrician and ask for a referral. The longer you wait, the more damage can be done to his development.
Check out your local public school district. Most school district have “Early Childhood Screenings” for children 3 and up. If he qualifies, that is if he’s behind in anything, he could qualify for free therapy (speech, physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc.). My son was delayed in speech and received free preschool (3 days a week) and had a speech therapist come in during class to help him. There’s also federal funded programs that therapists come to your home and evaluate him and if needed, comes back to your house to do therapy. You pay for that, but it’s based on your income on sliding scale. I definitely would not put him in a preschool until it’s determined if he has special needs. Whatever you do, do it now! The earlier you start getting him help, the better things will be.
From the age of 3 your school district is legally responsible to pay for his needs should they be in speech or autism. Contact your district and contact your pediatrician. DO NOT let money hold you back.
Since you don’t have the funds for a developmental assessment (they cost 2,500.00 dollars) and you are in the Philippines where this isn’t early intervention here are my suggestions.
Take this assessment:

it is very accurate
The fact that he repeats is a good sign, that’s echolalia and is considerated to be rather high functioning.
What to focus on is sensory integration. There are many strategies to help him be organized and improve his speech. Look into vibration, bouncing, blowing, and the wilbarger brushing protocol. I believe sensory integration is the hallmark cornerstone piece to improving all round organization and overall level of functioning.
His level of functioning isn’t static, he will improve over the next several years. My oldest son was lower functioning than what you describe at this age, he now is nearly indistinguishable at age 8.
Exposure, show him things, outside, continue pointing things out and talking to him. Give him exposure as much as possible to typical peers.
The earlier that you can enroll him in a preschool the better.
