Question by *~*love always*~*: Autism question…..?
Ok I asked a question earlier about my bf’s 4 year old son. All the sudden over the last few weeks 2-3 he has basically quit talking. When this first started he was mubbling, talking very softly & we noticed he was putting his tongue on the side of his mouth when he would talk. My bf’s ex wife refuses to believe that this is a problem..She claim’s its just a phase but my bf wants to get thier son into the doctor so when he tries to take him she always says that something came up etc
Several people mentioned that it could be autism. Would symptoms just now start showing up? I thought autism was normally noticable by 1 or 2. Or could the symptoms have been there all along & they were not noticing them? I have only been dating him 6 months but when we 1st started dating his son was speaking fine.
He is in speech therapy but he seems to be regressing instead of improving. Where is somewhere I can get a ‘checklist’ of autism symptoms so I can look to see if he shows anymore signs?
Now he won’t talk at all. He hasn’t said a single word other then daddy & sissy in at least the 2 days when I have been with them. I don’t know how much longer it has been going on when he was at his mom’s house

webmd would work, but you really should get him to the doctor. this was on an episode of scrubs where perry’s friend’s son built a block castle perfectly and with perfect color combinations, which is how he discovered he had autism. even if its nothing, its better to be safe then sorry. i hope everything works out well.

it could just be a phase but seeing a doctor would really help.
It could just be because he is so young and being passed from mother to fathers house he is getting confussed and doesnt know where he belongs especially if both his parents have new partners it can be very strange for a young child to understand.
You might want to see help if it keeps getting worse maybe froma child therapist instead of speech therapy but a doctor should know what to do.
he needs to be evaluated.his pediatrician should be able to answers questions and refer you to a specialist.
Wow- I would definitely get him to the pediatrician asap. There are other conditions that could be causing the sudden decrease in speech. If possible, I would see if there is any video footage of him up until this point that maybe the parents have, and then start videoing him now to show the difference. As far as symtoms of autism and when the occur, while many symptoms/traits are noticiable at a very young age, it is possible to have that sort of thing happen as you mentioned above in children as old as 6! Go onto Autismspeaks.org – they have checklists for signs.
I fully agree about the urgency of getting him checked. My son is autistic, so I know you can see signs of regression at 3 or 4. But this sounds severe enough to get medical attention. I would certainly see a pediatrician as soon as possible and possibly a pediatric neurologist. No trying to alarm you, but it does sound like something isn’t quite right.
